22 Jump Street was clearly made as a studio favorite, a powerhouse sequel that was not going to fail bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars. People were going to get paid if they made this unoriginal reboot/sequel. The good thing at least, is everyone involved knew this fact and poked fun of themselves in the process. The problem for me is that I found way too often that the only jokes I was laughing at were the ones where it broke the 4th wall and made fun of what they were doing. As I was watching it, I considered it a spoof of itself more often than anything else. It did have plenty of laugh out loud moments though, within those “look at us” type of jokes.
Taking a quick look at the story line, the guys are back undercover in college this time trying track down the main campus dealer of a new drug called “WHYPHY” which has recently killed a girl at the school. Sound familiar? That is because swapping the drug and subbing college for high school it is the exact same story line from last summer’s 21 Jump Street. That is OK i suppose. I am not going to be one to judge a comedy too much on its story line but this story was maybe just a little too reminiscent and just a little too flimsy to stand for the 120 minute run time. All in all, I would recommend saving your cash and spending your movie budget on something else this summer. Wait for a couple months when you can get it for 1/16 of the cost and spend a buck on it at the red box.
